Upgrade path to 8.5

We are running Domino 7.0.3 on an iSeries as our enterprise mail server and a Blackberry Enterprise Server running Domino 6.5.1 as a messaging server. We have clients at 6.5.1, 7.x, and 8.x. Questions: What is the path that we use to get to 8.5 on the enterprise server? Can we leave the BES at 6.5.1 or is it suggested to upgrade it also? What is the best practice to gracefully upgrade the clients to 8.5?
